Pokémon Rumble World brings microtransactions

We’ve finally found out what Pokémon Rumble World is – and, like we expected, it’s a spin-off to the Rumble series. What we didn’t expect? It’s the second free-to-play Nintendo game to feature in-app purchases, following in the steps of last month’s Pokémon Shuffle.

Pokémon Rumble World is heading straight to 3DS next week, on April 8. You’ll be able to pick it up for free from the 3DS eShop – and as soon as you get the game, you’ll find more than 700 pocket monsters ready for you to battle. Spanning the entire series, the Pokémon are presented as toys, which you can approach and battle, as you explore new areas via hot air balloon. It’s those balloons that provide the game’s microtransactions.

If you want to play without paying, that’s simple. Earn Poké Diamonds, the in-game currency, through StreetPass or by beating stages in the game. Not earning them fast enough? Fork over some real-world cash via the eShop and pick some up that way.

…it doesn’t take much to envisage a game like this popping up on a mobile platform – or even somewhere like Facebook – so we’ll be watching Pokémon Rumble World closely, to see whether it sticks to 3DS or finds somewhere new to explore.

To watch some early Pokémon Rumble World footage, check out this morning’s Nintendo Direct presentation from the 28:30 mark.
