Neill Blomkamp officially making Alien sequel!

Grab hold of Jonsey, put on your space suit and get ready to shake your fist at Weyland Yutani all over again, ’cause it looks like we’re getting another Aliens sequel. Before you defensively grab your copy of the first Alien whilst yelling “Stop! Stop she’s already dead!”, listen. Somethings different this time. It’s being made by a director that actually cares!

Neill Blomkamp, the filmic master behind District 9, Elysium and the upcoming Chappie, has made his love for the franchise no mystery. Just last month Blomkamp posted a series of concept art designs for a new Alien film, making no illusions to the fact it was very much unofficial. All whilst not so subtly hinting to studio 20th Century Fox that he’d happily make the project happen though.

It looks so good!

It looks so good!

At that point, most people, myself included, where just happy to dream what could of been. Maybe one day recreating the screenplay with action figures in a darkroom…but wait! Turns out we don’t have to! Blomkamp broke the news via social media, posting this glorious image with the text:

“So I think it’s officially my next film,”

Um… So I think it's officially my next film. #alien

Alright, so the Aliens are back. Who are they terrorizing this time? Probably some regular folk, maybe some Marines. Oh, possibly also the queen of interstellar bad-assery, Ripley!

“[Sigourney] knows about it,” Blomkamp told last week, “and part of it was just inspired by speaking to her on set when we were filming ‘Chappie,’ and getting her thoughts on ‘Alien’ and what she thought of the movies that came after ‘Aliens’ and what she felt about Ripley and what was incomplete for her about Ripley. There was so much fuel in what she was telling me.”

With returning characters and Blomkamp’s eye for engaging cinema, teamed with his often politically charged screenplays, just the prospect of this new flick has me frothing from the mouth! Other than Blomkamp’s tweet and his handful of concept art (which you can check out on his instagram), there’s not much else to talk about at the moment. But don’t let that stop you from excitedly speculating what could be! Hashtag BringBackBishop- Lance Henriksen needs it, man!
