Texas is getting ready for HavenCon – the state’s first LGBTQIA geek and gaming convention, held in Austin from April 4-5 at the Holiday Inn Midtown. If you want to head over, online ticket registration is open now, and you might be able to snag a meet-and-greet with the con’s two very special guests.
Confirmed guests include Korra herself, voice actor Janet Varney from The Legend of Korra, and Dante Basco, the man behind Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender.
It’s not just anime, though – Gearbox Software (based just down the road in Plano), will appear on panels and discussions, alongside LGBTQIA authors and artists. Expect discussions on topics such as “Coming Out Cosplay” and “Gaming Through The Ages”, as well as a chat with Doc “Pop Culture Professor” Housel.
On the video game side of things, there are also tournaments for Super Smash Bros and Modern Warfare – plus a 1K Super IQ Magic: The Gathering tournament. If that’s not enough, how about the Big Gay Cosplay Wedding?
Shane Brown, founder of HavenCon explains:
With HavenCon, we’re creating a safe, entertaining and diversity-welcoming environment for people that enjoy comic books, video games, science fiction and more. We want people to come in their favorite geek costumes, join us for games and tournaments, shop for a sci-fi or fantasy accessory, learn from industry and local talents, and meet people who share a common bond—all of it while celebrating what makes us both different and special.
Tickets for HavenCon are available at the official website. It is an all-ages event, but children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Proceeds from the event will go to OutYouth, a non-profit organisation based in Austin and central Texas, which provides services to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth aged 12 to 19.
