Alright! Today Sony Pictures unveiled the latest trailer for its newest entry into the dystopian sci-fi genre, Chappie. If any mention of this movie has slipped under your radar, ignore the rest of this article and skip down to the trailer embedded below. It’s cool, I’ll wait.
What instantly separates this from any other sci-fi flicks being released in the first quarter- scrap that, year- is the attached director, Neill Blomkamp, who brought us District 9 and Elysium. The new trailer focuses more on the society and world Chappie will be set in- as opposed to Chappie himself, watch this earlier trailer for that-, which plays into Blomkamp’s speciality of depicting gorgeously grungy environments and the unlying dark side of humanities self-preservative instincts.
From the combined trailers it looks like this will be Blomkamp’s love letter to the 80s sci-fi genre, invoking feelings of Short Circuit and Blade Runner, with equal parts human- well, humanoid- drama and amazing action set pieces.
Chappie hits theatres March 6 and stars Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver, Dev Patel, Sharlto Copley and Die Antwoord’s Yolandi Visser and Ninja.
