YES! YES! YES!!!
If you couldn’t tell, this has me super psyched! The team behind one of the greatest racing franchises ever- seriously, if you haven’t experienced WipeOut, jump on PSN and grab them now- have banded together to form a new studio to continue their pedigree of twitch reflex, anti-gravity racing.
The new studio, R8 Games, not only contains Sony Studio Liverpool alumni but also Rockstar and Team17 veterans amongst its ranks. With games like WipeOut, Midnight Club and GTA on their collective resume, you know these guys understand adrenal gland draining gaming.
Their first title and latest entry to the barren genre is Formula Fusion, an anti-grav racer inspired by F Zero X and Wipeout – specifically Wipeout 2097. Earlier this month , R8 summited the game to Steam Greenlight, where it’s been doing rather well. The neon art style, cortex gratifying beats and sheer speed looks and sounds wonderfully familiar, to the point where I’m starting to sweat (don’t judge me).
The project is heading to Kickstarter in March but if you’re as sold as I am- or suckered by nostalgia, depending on how you look at it- you can buy into the Test Pilot Program now. The playable PC build is expected in June, with no other platforms being indicated so far.
I just hope they can skirt copyright and feature homages to classic ships like Triackis and Feisar. The 10 year old in me demands satisfaction!
