Ridiculously-popular Japanese mobile game Puzzle & Dragons is getting a makeover and a new platform, thanks to a partnership between Nintendo and GungHo Online Entertainment. Leaving smartphones and tablets behind, the Super Mario Bros-themed spin-off will be available exclusively for 3DS.
Puzzle & Dragons is a puzzle role-playing game that first hit Japanese iOS devices back in 2012. It’s been released in a handful of western territories, but is most popular in its home country, where it’s been downloaded more than 32 million times.
The new announcement – made jointly by both Nintendo‘s Shigeru Miyamoto and GungHo CEO Kazuki Morishita – confirmed that Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros Edition would be released in Japan on April 29. It will feature the same classic gameplay mechanic, combined with bonus power-ups, a new in-game map, and our favourite Nintendo characters, including Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi and others.
No word as yet – of course – on whether this 3DS outing will make it into other regions, but for now it’s a Japanese exclusive.
