There just might be something in the works to wash away the bad taste left by the 1993 Super Mario Bros movie, if a new deal comes to fruition. Sony and Nintendo are reportedly in talks to create a new movie based on the plumber brothers – and this time, it’ll be animated.
The video game tie-in is one of the many franchises mentioned in leaked Sony documents, with emails from Arad himself forming most of the story. He’s on record emailing Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto to discuss the project, as well as telling Sony Studio Chief Amy Pascal in October:
I am the proud father of mario the animated film [sic].
Pascal suggested that Star Wars: Clone Wars director Genndy Tartakovsky could be a good fit for the director’s chair, but nothing’s yet been confirmed.
It’s been more than 20 years since Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo stepped into the classic roles – but we’ll never forget. This new project (if it eventuates) doesn’t have to be great, it just has to be better.
Should the movie be made, it will be the second time Super Mario Bros. has made it to the big screen, the first being the outright abysmal 1993 Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo live action adaptation.
