Oh boy. Things just keep getting better and better for fans of the Nintendos brawler Super Smash Brothers. Oh sorry, I meant worse…definitely worse. First there’s the ongoing famine of Gamecube controller adapters for the Wii U- which has caused speculators to froth at the the mouth, with the $20 unit now selling on ebay for as much as $150- and now there’s confirmation that some amiibo won’t see a second printing.
I hope you weren’t hanging out to grab Marth, Wii Fit Trainer or (my go to arse kicker) Villager because the Big N have essentially confirmed that you’re all outta luck.
“We will aim for certain amiibo to always be available. These will be for our most popular characters like Mario and Link. Due to shelf space constraints, other figures likely will not return to the market once they have sold through their initial shipment,” read the statement sent to WIRED.
The Nintendo representative also told WIRED that the company would not go into specifics about which characters would always be available and which ones would only see a single run.
Marth, Villager and to a slightly lesser extent Wii Fit Trainer, have been particularly hard to score since launch, with many outlets not receiving enough to fill preorders. Sheerly from a business perspective, I totally get it. These characters are from niche titles- Fire Emblem especially- and are never going to garner the dump trucks of cash for Nintendo that Mario or Pikachu ever would.
Problem is, in doing this Nintendo gives insane power to the annoying blight of collectors in every field- the speculator market! This news spread quicker than videos of kittens on social media, with Ebay listings already averaging $70 per figure and only expected to climb higher.
So my advice, if you want any amiibos in particular from the next run- grab them as early as possible. If the character is slightly obscure- grab it even quicker. Now you’ll have to excuse me, I must head to every store I can in search of a Villager, ’cause I’ll be damned if I’m taking out a small business loan to get him!
