Less than two months after the release of the New Nintendo 3DS XL in Japan, Nintendo has announced it will discontinue production of the (old) 3DS XL. The (old) 3DS and the 2DS tablet will remain on shelves.
The news came via an update to the Japanese 3DS XL website, which now bears the statement “ending production soon”, alongside the seven (seven!) 3DS XL colours that are currently available in that country. The regular 3DS will still be produced in various colours.
We don’t know quite when Nintendo will discontinue the 3DS XL (or 3DS LL as it’s known in Japan), or if this change will expand to other countries as the New 3DS hardware is rolled out.
Since its October release, the New 3DS XL has been the best-selling video game platform in Japan, with sales tracker Media Create anticipating more than 1.2 million units will have been sold by the end of 2014.
The New handhelds launched in Australia two weeks ago, but there are still no details on when the hardware will be released to the rest of the world.
