‘Tis the season, I’m afraid: Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is currently facing a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, which may cause intermittent connection issues for some gamers.
The studio is quick to point out that even though the attacks are causing login difficulties – and have been for several days – your personal customer information and character data “are not in danger of being exposed”. According to Square Enix, an anonymous third party is targeting game servers on the NA/EU data center. The attack has been described as a “massive number of access attempts”, affecting game servers, network equipment and network connection.
Our technical staff is taking every possible measure to address this issue but the attack is still continuing to take place by changing their methods at every moment. We will continue to monitor and work on recovery from every possible angle.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing.
Fingers crossed, this should blow over soon – the best course of action for a DDoS attack is simply to weather the storm. For the most updated information, head to the game’s official website – it will be kept updated as things change.
