Looks like the tide has turned in Azeroth: The fifth World of Warcraft expansion set Warlords of Draenor has bumped the game’s global subscriber base back over the 10 million mark, with Blizzard reporting growth “across all major regions”.
More than 3.3 million copies of the game were sold through within the first 24 hours of Warlords being on sale, following a launch in North America, Latin America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia. Today marks the second part of the global launch, as Warlords arrives in South Korea, mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.
As we’ve mentioned previously, the massive launch caused some equally massive headaches, no thanks to the malicious DDoS attack on the game’s already struggling servers. While the attack simply had to be waited out, Blizzard has been working “around the clock” to fix the in-game side of the problem, increasing realm capacity and rolling out a number of updates. Those 10 million subscribers are also set to receive free game time, by way of an apology.
Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard explains:
We’re thrilled that so many players jumped in to play Warlords of Draenor on day one and are having a great time with the new content. We poured a lot of hard work and passion into this expansion, and we appreciate all the kind words from players and the overwhelming support they continue to show for World of Warcraft.
The expansion set tells a new story: Garrosh Hellscream has escaped through the Dark Portal, and he’s hell-bent on turning the orc clans into the terrifying Iron Horde, which could well be responsible for the destruction of Azeroth. Obviously, you must play your part in preventing this from happening!
Warlords of Draenor also gives you the chance to build and manage your own mighty Garrison, a new level cap of 100, the huge and dynamic PvP zone of Ashran, and a whole stack of new Dungeons, Raids, Battlegrounds and Challenge Modes.
You do need the original World of Warcraft to play the expansion set – and Warlords of Draenor is available as both a standard and Deluxe edition, so hunt around to make sure you get the one you want!
