Sony‘s latest flash sale offers dozens of games and movies “at a sweet discount”, and the theme connecting all of the titles is sweeter still. The company’s not drawing attention to it, but every single game and movie included on the seemingly-random list features strong female characters.
From Hatsune Miku: Project Diva, Bayonetta, Fat Princess and Portal 2 to Haywire, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Million Dollar Baby and Salt, Sony‘s collection runs the gamut of female characters. Some are ‘goodies’, some are ‘baddies’, and many are somewhere in between.
The best thing about this Flash Sale (which is US-only, sorry), is that Sony isn’t drawing attention to it. The PlayStation blog post simply points out that there are “more than 20 games and more than 30 movies on sale”, and doesn’t mention anything about connecting themes, gendered heroes, or other hints that this is anything more than a random selection. The message: These are not “great titles featuring women”. These are “great titles”, full stop.
In a gaming space where women are being targeted and victimised, and we’re told that games with strong female characters “don’t sell” (just like the movies), it’s great to see a company as large as Sony standing up for us – and even better that it doesn’t feel the need to make a song and dance about it.
