Did you know that Angry Birds is being made into a film? It sure is, and there are some impressive names stepping up to voice our frustrated feathery friends. The team at Rovio tucked the news into the game, and by slinging one billion birds worldwide, gamers have now unlocked the secrets.
Taking on the role of Red, “a bird with a temper problem”, is Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses, We’re the Millers). He’ll be joined by Danny McBride (Eastbound & Down, This is the End) as Bomb, and Josh Gad in his first animated role since Frozen, who plays Chuck. Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage is also playing a role – he’s officially the legendary Mighty Eagle (here’s hoping he does better than he did in Destiny…).
John Cohen, producer of the film explains:
I’m extremely proud of this cast. Not only do we have Jason, Josh, Danny, Bill, Maya, and Peter bringing these characters to life, but they’re surrounded by an all-star ensemble of emerging comedic talent – these are some of the funniest people out there today, and we’re thrilled to have them all on board.
That all-star ensemble includes Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, Keegan-Michael Key, Kate McKinnon, Tony Hale, Ike Barinholtz, Hannibal Buress, Cristela Alonzo, Jillian Bell, Danielle Brooks, Romeo Santos and even YouTubers Smosh (Ian Andrew Hecox and Anthony Padilla).
Blanca Juti, Chief Marketing Officer of Rovio chimes in:
We heard limbs and dialogue were all the rage in modern animation so we went all in. Not just one, but all of our characters have legs and wings! Except for the pigs, that is…
This is the first feature film to come out of Rovio, although the company has been producing weekly Angry Birds Toons animations for a while now. The series has surpassed more than three billion views in its first 18 months, paving the way for a full-length feature film.
Angry Birds the movie is set to hit U.S. cinemas on July 1, 2016, directed by Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis.
