Steam has undergone a makeover. More than just a few simple aesthetic tweaks, Valve has completely overhauled the digital distribution service, as the Steam Discovery Update is rolled out to users. The update is designed to optimise the Steam shopping experience, with a stack of new features and functionality.
The changes are part of Valve‘s response to the number of new releases added in recent times – more than 1,300 new games have been added in just the past nine months. More than 100 million gamers use the service worldwide, so the ageing website was in need of a revamp.
Now, visitors to Steampowered.com are greeted with a “smarter” Home page, complete with recommendations based on the games you’ve been playing, the games your friends recommend, and which titles you’ve purchased in the past.
Valve‘s Alden Kroll explains:
We have made great efforts to increase the number of titles we can publish on Steam, which means more choices for customers. This update introduces multiple features and functionality to help customers explore Steam’s growing catalog and find the games they are most interested in playing.
The service’s Search engine has also been updated, with the addition of “extremely detailed filters” that make it easier than ever to find the stuff you want. If you don’t know what you’re after, a new Curators feature means you can pick and choose from someone else’s tastes instead.
Valve has thoughtfully provided a detailed introduction to this new smarter storefront in case you have any further questions – but the easiest way to find out what’s new is to head to Steampowered.com, log in, and start exploring. We’ll be here when you get back.
