I really wish I had a comedic intro to this but I’m far too angry and generally disgusted, so here we go.
GDC (Game Developers Conference) organizers have released an anonymous email threatening to detonate a bomb at this years event. The organizers were told that the device would be be detonated if they didn’t rescind the award they were going to present to Feminist Frequency’s Anita Sarkeesian, for her polarizing YouTube series ‘Tropes vs. Women in Video Games’.
The email stated:
“A bomb will be detonated at the Game Developer’s Choice award ceremony tonight unless Anita Sarkeesian’s Ambassador Award is revoked. We estimate the bomb will kill at least a dozen people and injure dozens more. It would be in your best interest to accept our simple request. This is not a joke. You have been warned.”
In an interview with Kotaku, the organizers stated they took the threat very seriously, calling in the San Francisco Police Department. The SFPD brought in their Explosive Ordinance Disposal Division to investigate the venue, where they fortunately found nothing.
Upon not finding any explosive devices, the organizers still decided to ramp the security of the event, adding more guards and bag checks. The award ceremony continued without a hitch, with attendee’s (other than Sarkeesian) unaware of the threat.
Sarkeesian was presented with the Ambassador Award, which is described on GDC’s website as going to “an individual or individuals who have helped the game industry advance to a better place, either through facilitating a better game community from within, or by reaching outside the industry to be an advocate for video games and help further our art.”
Hopefully, these extremist opposers of Sarkeesian’s perspective are found promptly and punished severely under domestic terrorism laws. It’s not funny. It’s not big. It’s cowardly and pathetic. The sooner we can accept intelligent debate within our industry, without fear for each others safety or prospect of mob rule, the better.
