“Bird lovers everywhere are aflutter,” we’re told, as Hatoful Boyfriend lands today on PC, Mac and Linux thanks to developer Mediatonic and publisher Devolver Digital. In case you missed it, this is that game where you play as a human searching for love at a prestigious school, where all the other students are birds.
It’s actually not the first time the story’s been explored, Hatoful Boyfriend is a reworked version of Hato Moa’s “seminal visual novel”, but this time around we’ve been given updated visuals, an all-new scenario to play through and even a brand new ending to check out.
Devolver CFO Fork Parker claims he signed up to publish the game under false pretences:
The team at Mediatonic pitched Hatoful Boyfriend as the next evolution of the MOBA which was unfortunately later explained as a Multicolored Offline Bird Academia.
The storyline is simple. You are the only human at the St. PigeoNation, and you must manage your elective school classes as well as finding a suitable love interest. Go on romantic dates and follow your heart – but we’re warned there’s more than a few “fowl twists and turns” along the way.
You can pick the game up from Steam in either the standard edition or the “Summer of Dove Collector’s Edition”, which also includes the official digital soundtrack, exclusive wallpapers of Oko-san, a digital comic from series creator Hato Moa, and a digital copy of the St. PigeoNation’s 2014 Yearbook.
…I would like to point out that we did not use any of our own bird-related puns in this article, because they’re overdone and just not coo.
