Nintendo plans Pokémon Trading Card Game for iOS

Pokémon is coming to iOS, but it might not be the way you were hoping. Pokémon Trading Card Game Online is officially headed to iPad, and while it’s not necessarily the gotta catch ’em all RPG fans have been asking for, it’s still a nifty little offering.

While fans were understandably excited over the game when the above image appeared on Josh Wittenkeller’s Twitter, Nintendo is keeping quiet, releasing just a single line statement on the topic:

Yes, we can confirm that is the Pokémon TCG Online iPad app, and it’s coming later this year.

First launched in Japan in 1996, Pokémon Trading Card Game Online is a perfect match for the iPad, bringing a certain interactivity to the popular TCG. Given the recent successes of other, similar trading card titles, it just makes sense.

Previously, we’ve seen iOS Apps from big N (the Pokédex springs to mind), but this is the first real game for the platform. Investors and gamers have been suggesting a move to smartphones and tablets for years, to help boost the company’s flagging sales.

Pokémon Trading Card Game Online should be hitting iOS before the end of 2014, and – hopefully – marks the beginning of a delicious Apple/Nintendo relationship.
