Sunset Overdrive to feature female assassins

Ubisoft might not have room for a female assassin in Assassin’s Creed: Unity, but she’s found a safe new home – in Sunset Overdrive!

At this year’s E3, Ubisoft technical director James Therien explained that there would be no female playable characters in Assassin’s Creed Unity because it would have “doubled the work”.

Today, Sunset Overdrive game director Drew Murray acknowledges that yeah, adding extra character types to the game might have meant more work for the Insomniac team. He also explains that the developers were happy to do it because the idea of having a flexible main character who can wear whatever she wants and look however he wants was important to them.

You can see the unnamed lady-assassin in the latest episode of Sunset TV, Insomniac‘s developer diary series.

Murray explains the studio’s philosophy:

Yes, you can play as a female.
Yes, we have different races.
Yes, we have different body sizes.
Yes, you can wear whatever you want regardless of what size or gender or other choice you make.
Yes, we removed all RPG-stats from clothing so you can look how you want to look and don’t have to pick the Robin Hood hat because it gives you +2 dexterity.
Yes, all of these decisions were very important to us and involved many, many, many (many!!!) long fights both internally and externally.
Yes, you can let your freak flag fly, high and proud.

We weren’t able to focus too much on that element in our recent preview of the game – or in our Sunset Overdrive episode of Player Attack – but trust me. Having spent some time getting up close ‘n’ personal with Sunset Overdrive and the amazing character customisation that’s at your fingertips, it’s obvious that the studio has put a lot of effort into making sure that you can make your hero everything you want it to be.

In closing, Murray quotes New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham:

The wider world perceives fashion sometimes as a frivolity that should be done away with in the face of social upheavals and problems that are enormous. The point is, in fact, that it’s the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.

With Sunset Overdrive set to hit the US on the same day as Assassin’s Creed Unity, it’ll be interesting to see which player character gamers choose to spend more time with.
