With E3 just a couple of weeks away, EA has announced one of its big titles a little early. Battlefield Hardline is set for official reveal on June 9 as part of the publisher’s glorious E3 press conference, so make sure you act surprised.
Steve Papoutsis, VP and GM of Visceral, announces that the game will launch by the end of the year:
It’s a brand new series in the Battlefield franchise, set against the backdrop of a genre we all love – the war on crime and the battle between cops and criminals.
As with all things like this, the announcement was foreshadowed by a leak – a new codename, “BFH”, had popped up in a recent Battlelog update. The details suggested a cross-gen release – PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC – and a potential “cops vs robbers” theme with four soldier classes.
Rather than feigning ignorance, it didn’t take long for EA to own up, confirming that Battlefield Hardline is in the works at Visceral Games, and it is one of the six new games earmarked for reveal at E3.
Several years ago, I was at an internal EA meeting in Barcelona with creative leaders from across the company. It was there I met Karl Magnus Troedsson, the GM of DICE, for the first time, and we immediately began talking about games – I’ve always loved Battlefield and KM was a huge fan of Dead Space, which I was working on at the time. We started talking about different ways we could work together, different ways we could take Battlefield and action games in a new direction. It was then that this project that became Battlefield Hardline was born.
Papoutsis even acknowledges the leak, noting that “fans found some details on our website about what we’re working on”, and acknowledging that the studio is paying close attention to what gamers are saying.
