EA shutting down online services for 50 games

The shutdown of Gamespy services is set to have a wider impact than fans had anticipated, with EA publishing a list of 50 games that will lose online functionality at the end of June, including Battlefield 2 and Crysis.

Earlier, we’d heard the publisher was “in talks” to hopefully negotiate shifting some of these games over to its own Origin service, but it seems it was less successful than gamers had hoped.

The official list mentions a handful of Battlefield titles including BF2, 1942 and 2142, several Command & Conquers for PC, and a bunch of Wii and DS titles.

EA explains:

As games get replaced with newer titles, the number of players still enjoying the older games dwindles to a level — typically fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles — where it’s no longer feasible to continue the behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these games up and running.

The full affected list below:

Of course, it is possible that EA is just publishing a worst-case scenario here. These may be games that are facing the axe, and negotiations may still be continuing over which ones will survive.

…but until we hear otherwise, you’d better get all your BF2 multiplayer in right now – it might not be around in two months.
