Microsoft hiring for a well-loved strategy franchise

Microsoft is planning something big for strategy fans, even if it hasn’t told us exactly what that is. An avid job hunter has spotted a “help wanted” ad for Microsoft Studios, promising work on a “well-loved strategy game franchise”.

The ad was first posted by CVG and reads:

Microsoft Studios is looking for a highly experienced senior games developer to help build and lead the team for a new AAA title within an established and well-loved strategy game franchise.

Microsoft is well known for making all sorts of games, but its strategy library isn’t the most well-stocked. This has lead many fans to breathlessly wonder if the studio is in fact working on a new title in the Age of Empires franchise, which certainly meets both the “established” and “well-loved” criteria.

The free-to-play Age of Empires Online was shut down last September following a three year run, but other than that, we haven’t seen a full Age of Empires title since AoE 3 hit back in 2005.

It seems like a fine time to dust off the skill trees and get back to a previous age… that is, unless Microsoft has somewhere picked up the rights to another big name strategy title…?
