If you’re still running around in Arma 2: Free, we’ve got some bad news for you. Developer Bohemia Interactive has confirmed the free-to-play version of the game will be put to sleep later this month.
Your final day to play is April 22nd – after that, Bohemia is taking down the downloads and shutting up the servers.
Don’t know what we’re talking about? Arma 2: Free was launched back in 2011, as a trimmed-back version of Arma 2. It sacrificed graphics, campaign mode and mod support, instead simply offering a full multiplayer experience and an in-game editor.
Gamers are able to play the free edition alongside standalone Arma 2 gamers on a selection of maps, as long as nobody had modded anything.
The news is linked to the end of Gamespy’s online server closure on May 31st. Bohemia CEO Marek Spanel has confirmed that it will shift other games – Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead and Arma 3 – over to Steam for multiplayer functionality, but Arma 2 Free is missing out.
The premium version of the game is still available, so if you still want your Arma 2 experience, you’ll just have to fork out a little money.
