It’s been out for a little while now, but Respawn Entertainment isn’t resting on its laurels. It’s already planned a number of updates for Titanfall, including the unusual choice to reconfigure matchmaking to prioritise skill over speed.
While many gamers think that Titanfall is the greatest thing since mechs were invented, there’s a vocal component of the fanbase that is really unhappy with the game’s matchmaking system.
At present, you are matched up fairly quickly, with mixed results. While some games you’ll land in a team of evenly-matched players, facing off against another team of evenly-matched players, most of the time you’ll find yourself the lowest-ranked person on your team – or worse – the other team is ranked universally higher than everybody on your side.
Respawn is addressing the problem on two major fronts:
1. Searching for teammates and opponents will now sometimes take more time to look for players that are a good skill level match, rather than purely prioritizing speed over quality. This will give us more time to build better teams and create closer games that are worth staying in for a longer period of time.
2. Rather than playing against the same opponents over and over, the game will periodically split the teams apart and search for new opponents for each team. This means if one team is dominating, we will update the skill for all of the players and then find each team a better suited match for the next round. Did you lose to a really great team? We’ll make them disappear and replace them with a new opposing team – and they will have no idea that you just got your butts kicked. This should end some of the frustration with playing for extended periods when you’re having an off night.
Of course, with any online multiplayer game, mismatches are bound to happen – but they’re not fun or exciting when they happen every round. EA‘s compromise – longer wait times for better matches – sounds like a pretty great fix (not perfect, but better).
If you want to see how this is all going, Respawn has thrown open the doors to the “Improved Matchmaking (Beta)” playlist, under “Play Classic MP”. As things are tweaked and upgraded, the mode may be rolled out to other playlists, to ensure the best balance.
