Company of Heroes 2 gets standalone multiplayer

Sega is taking a different approach with its next expansion for Company of Heroes 2. The Western Front Armies is technically a multiplayer expansion for last year’s RTS smash, but you won’t need the original game to play.

Labelling the project a “minimal entry point” into the CoH2 community, The Western Front Armies might be cut down in price, but not in quality.

Company of Heroes 2: The Western Front Armies heads back to the Western Front that we first saw in the original Company of Heroes all those years ago. This time around, there are two new and unique collections of content to work through.

Choose between the German Oberkommando West and the US forces, each side has its own new infantry, team weapons, vehicles, abilities, upgrades and distinctive tactical gameplay options. The expansion also adds eight seasonal multiplayer maps (all set on the Western Front), alongside a handful of extra content designed to invite you deeper into the tactical and strategic elements of this great battle.

Greg Wilson, Executive Producer at developer Relic Entertainment explains:

We know how much fans love the setting of the original game and we have responded to their request to revisit the Western Front. By offering Western Front focused content to Company of Heroes 2, we are giving players a brand new set of tactical options that significantly expand their multiplayer experience. At the same time, it has never been easier for new players to get access to our vast multiplayer community.

The new maps bring the total to more than 30 (plus more than 1,000 community maps on Steam Workshop – and even if you’ve only picked up Western Front Armies, you can play across all of them in auto-match multiplayer.

We don’t yet have an exact date for Company of Heroes 2: The Western Front Armies, but you should expect it some time in June this year.
