Steam Controller loses central touch pad

This week is the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco – so expect plenty of news to come out of California. One company everybody will be keeping an eye on is Valve, who will be revealing its latest prototype Steam Controller.

A spokesperson explains:

The latest version refines ergonomic aspects of the Controller by adding two diamond-patterned button layouts in the area previously designated for a touch screen display. These analog buttons are offered in addition to the touch pads featured in the original prototypes.

This change will theoretically make it easier for developers to coordinate backwards-compatibility with existing games, as the more traditional layout lines up more neatly with existing gamepad controllers. Adding new directional buttons should also make navigation and movement easier for legacy WASD titles.

If you want to get your hands on one of these, be patient. Valve has promised that a Steam Controller will be included with every official Steam Machine when they launch later this year.
