SimCity's offline mode in final testing

Offline play for SimCity is in “final testing”, says Maxis, confirming that update 10 is getting closer and closer to release.

This is the latest update in a long drawn-out saga that started with the city builder’s March 2013 release, when we were told offline play simply “wasn’t possible”.

Then, in a bizarre and exciting backflip, Patrick Buechner, General Manager of the Maxis Emeryville studio, told us that offline support was on the way.

Now, while we still don’t have a date, we’ve been thrown a little hope via Twitter:

Update 10 is in final testing. Almost there Mayors.

According to Simon Fox, Lead Engineer on SimCity‘s Single Player Mode, it took more than six months of coding to make the game work smoothly offline.

Even things that seem trivial, like the way that cities are saved and loaded, had to be completely reworked in order to make this feature function correctly.

So – we still don’t have a release window, but we’re hoping we should be counting weeks, not months for the offline mode for SimCity.
