BioShock Infinite originally shipped with the special, super-difficult 1999 mode, which was unlockable either by playing through the entirety of the game, or by entering a special code (…miss that update? Try the Konami Code…).
So now, it makes sense that another new gameplay mode is being added – and this one ups the difficulty in a very different way.
1998 Mode is inspired by games like Thief, challenging gamers to complete the narrative using only non-lethal means.
Ken Levine, creative director of Irrational explains:
In Burial at Sea – Episode Two we put a focus on balance and stealth mechanics. As we were developing this new style of gameplay, we started to see people self-impose non-lethal playthrough’s. Given the fan reception of 1999 Mode, we thought it would be cool to give them another way to play Burial at Sea that challenged their mastery of stealth tools.
The new mode will be added to the original gameplay difficulty settings and 1999 mode when Burial at Sea – Episode Two launches on March 25.
