Sony Pictures are to produce a feature film adaptation of the upcoming book Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo and the Battle that Defined a Generation, which follows the story of a small tech start-up called Sega as they go toe-to-toe with gaming industry giant Nintendo in the 1990’s.
Book Trade are reporting that the movie will be directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Knocked Up, Superbad), who are also picking up the screenplay writing duties. The pair are no strangers to the source material as they are also writing the foreword for the book, which is due for release on 19th July and features testimony from hundreds of people who saw the behind-the-scenes battles that took place between the two companies as they helped turn the gaming industry into what it is today.
The movie is said to be a “behind-the-scenes business thriller” according to a report on Eurogamer, but for those that prefer their documentaries a little less Hollywood Rogen and Goldberg are also working on a straight-up documentary on the subject with the books author, Blake J. Harris.
As you would expect at this stage in the process, no release window or any potential cast members have been revealed.
