Technically, it is still the Year of Luigi, despite the calendar flicking over to 2014 nearly two months ago. However, these halcyon days are soon coming to an end, says Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto.
Miyamoto has made an official statement on the Miiverse – essentially, all good things must come to an end.
Almost a year has passed since I announced the Year of Luigi, marking the 30th anniversary of Luigi’s debut. Thanks to everyone’s kind support, we were able to release many Luigi games over the course of the year. I hope everyone continues to cheer for the green brother!
Officially, the Year of Luigi will end on March 18th. Until then, Miyamoto invites gamers to share their thoughts on Luigi with people from around the world.
It is not yet known whether Nintendo will name a mascot for next year, or if this was a (glorious) one-off. Either way, the Year of Luigi has made many people very happy, and I think we’re all a little bit better for it.
