New slim Vita bundled with Borderlands 2 in US

At last year’s Tokyo Game Show, Sony unveiled plans for a brand new slim-style PlayStation Vita. It’s been a long few months since then, but – finally – we have word that yes, the PCH-2000 series PS Vita Wi-Fi model is coming to the West. Even better: It’s bringing with it a pocket-sized version of Borderlands 2.

To recap: The new Vita is roughly 20% slimmer and 15% lighter than the original, and the edges have been nicely rounded so the console fits more neatly in your sweaty palms. It’s done away with the OLED screen, preferring a 5-inch HD liquid crystal display (LCD) that promises the same “deep, immersive gaming experience” that you’d get in the original.

Battery life has been boosted from 3-5 hours up to 4-6 if you’re playing games, and up to 7 if you’re lying around watching videos (compared to just 5 in the current model).

The game itself has been properly revamped for the smaller console. It’s a full Borderlands 2 experience, optimised for both the front touchscreen and rear touchpad (used to zoom/pan on maps, manage your inventory, inspect items, etc). You’ll get four-person multiplayer via Infrastructure online play – and if you really want, you can cross-save with your PS3.

If you want to make things really easy for yourself, pick up the Borderlands 2 Limited Edition PlayStation Vita Bundle when it launches in the North American Spring. You’ll get a slim PS Vita (of course), plus a new hand-held version of the role-playing shooter smash from Gearbox Software (including all six previously-released DLC packs), and an 8GB Vita memory card.

No word yet on an Australian/New Zealand/European launch for either product, but we’ll keep you posted.
