Long-time Tim Schafer fans have been greeted by a familiar soundtrack as they step into Double Fine adventure Broken Age. Schafer’s teamed up again with old friend and award-winning composer Peter McConnell, best known for his work on Monkey Island and Grim Fandango.
McConnell has worked more recently with Double Fine on Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, but this new project is something special. Live recordings from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra are used as just one element of a complex, colourful score which Schafer says he’s more than happy with.
I’ve worked with Peter for twenty years now, and have loved every soundtrack he’s created, but I have to say that this could possibly be my favorite. There are several points in this score that make the hair stand up on my neck. Also the hair on my back. And those weird little patches of hair on my upper arms that look like sheriff badges. Anyway, it’s an amazing soundtrack.
Broken Age is out right now for backers, with a full release headed our way on January 28th. That also – surprise, surprise – is the date the full official soundtrack will land on BandCamp, but if you’d like a sneaky peek, pop on over to McConnell’s SoundCloud page and indulge in some samples.
