SimCity getting Offline support real soon now

With the news that SimCity was getting modding support, everybody wanted to know one thing: When would the city-builder get off-line support for singleplayer? The answer, according to Maxis, is “Soon”.

Patrick Buechner, General Manager of the Emeryville Maxis studio, explains that the long-awaited tweak will come bundled with currently undated Update 10. When it hits, you’ll be able to access all of your previously downloaded content, without the need for an ongoing internet connection.

From Update 10, the game will still play the same, with on-going Regions or Multiplayer games with people around the planet. The big difference: Single Player Mode, which means you can play Offline, in your own little virtual world (literally). All your saved games will be stored locally, so it’s a return to form for the city-builder.

Prefer to stay online? Feel free: You’ll be able to access the Global Market, Leaderboards and Multiplayer gameplay – as well as your pre-existing saved cities and regions… but Offline is where the fun stuff’s about to happen, says Buechner:

Bringing the game Offline means big things for our wonderful community of Modders. They can now make modifications to the game and its components without compromising the integrity of the Online game. Modding is a big part of our studio’s legacy and we’re excited to see what you guys create. Check out this thread to learn about Oppie85’s Central Train Station, which you can put into your game right now, and if you’re interested in making your own content take a look at the Modding Policy. To get you started, we will be rolling out a series of tutorials from the studio that surfaces how we’ve created some of the content that you’ve seen so far in hopes of inspiring your creativity.

Offline mode is currently “in the late phases” of development, with Maxis planning a release as soon as possible. The studio does want to make sure that the update is as polished as possible before release, so it’s going through some rigorous testing (hoping to escape without the same drama that befell the game’s initial launch).

We’ll keep you posted, and will let you know as soon as Offline play is added to SimCity!
