With Mirror’s Edge 2 edging ever closer, we’ve learned about one more element of the original that will not be making the return. Writer Rhianna Pratchett, the pen behind the first parkour-tacular adventure, has announced she is not working on the upcoming sequel.
In fact, she wasn’t even asked, Pratchett tells Twitter:
It’s really lovely that people care enough to ask whether I’m involved with Mirror’s Edge 2, but I’m not & wasn’t asked.
While her name has been attached to a whole stack of games held up as some of the best of the generation (BioShock Infinite, Heavenly Sword, Tomb Raider), Pratchett acknowledges that the story for Mirror’s Edge wasn’t the best, observing an eleventh-hour decision to scrap all of Faith’s level dialogue:
Let’s face it, ME1’s story didn’t review that great (for many reasons). So I consider myself a casualty of that development process. By all accounts it’s a new team on it, so go with God, I say. Create cool stuff. We always need more of that.
The “cool stuff” the team is working on includes an open-world system, something new to the series. It’s part of the approach to make the sequel “reach a bigger group of people”, explains EA executive Frank Gibeau.
We don’t know when it’ll be ready, or even what it’s actually called, but the game is headed to PC, PS4 and Xbox One when it gets there.
