Sega had long-time fans in a bit of a tizzy in the leadup for Christmas, seemingly teasing something to do with the much-loved Shenmue franchise. While nobody really believed it would be the release of Shenmue 3, we were still hoping for a little more than this.
The glorious revelation that had all our hopes up: Shenmue lead Ryo Hazuki will be a playable character in the Android / iOS versions of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, which hits mobile devices this week. (Yes, it’s been out on PC and console for a while now.)
In Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, the playable characters can drive their own karts across water and air as well as land, changing form as they go. Ryo’s vehicle? A retro Sega arcade cabinet, which displays either Hang-On, Space Harrier or Out Run depending on what it’s currently traversing.
…but it’s not as simple a matter of just picking up the game and playing away as Ryo. To unlock the character, you’ll need to achieve a full streak of in-game weekly challenges, because what’s a mobile game without a gimmick?
