Nintendo mashes up the past with NES Remix

Gamers love retro. Gamers love mashups. Goes without saying then, that gamers love retro mashups – and Nintendo has spotted the trend. The company has released a brand new project, NES Remix, that smooshes some of your favourite things all into one handy package.

It’s not quite the free-for-all you might be after, but it’s a nifty thing nonetheless. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata explains that the studio has taken “the best parts” from 16 classic games and given them a serious tweak, throwing in some all-new challenges.

For example: A blacked out Excitebike track where the only illumination is your headlight, a battle against a giant King Koopa from Super Mario Bros, and a replay of the original Donkey Kong, starring Link from The Legend of Zelda.

If you’re the caring, sharing type (or just want to gloat), there are Stamps available for NES Remix that you can use in Miiverse to show off your high scores.

And proving that this time, they’ve got it right: Nintendo has already released NES Remix! You can snag the 400MB+ download from the Wii U eShop right now for $13.00 – just in time for the holidays.
