Doom creator, industry technical juggernaut and co-founder of id software, John Carmack has left the studio. He was the last of the four original owners to stay with the company.

Tim Willits, studio director at id, broke the news:

John Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio. John’s work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects. We are fortunate to have a brilliant group of programmers at id who worked with John and will carry on id’s tradition of making great games with cutting-edge technology. As colleagues of John for many years, we wish him well.

Earlier this year, Carmack recently joined the the gaming headset company, Oculus, as chief technology officer, but wanted to still stay at id Software in some capacity. At the time, id parent company Bethesda announced:

Happy to say [John Carmack] is not leaving id & will continue to provide leadership for our games in development.

However, times change, as Carmack tweeted on Friday:

I wanted to remain a technical adviser for Id, but it just didn’t work out. Probably for the best, as the divided focus was challenging.

The match with Oculus is a good one, as Carmack explained Bcak in August:

…the dream of VR has been simmering in the background for decades, but now, the people and technologies are finally aligning to allow it to reach the potential we imagined. I’m extremely excited to make a mark in what I truly believe will be a transformative technology.

And with this being man who has revolutionised gaming technology tenfold over the years, I can guarantee, things are going to get a whole lot more interesting!
