The initial rush might have died down, but Mojang is still happily working away at Minecraft – Pocket Edition, with updates 0.8.0 and 0.9.0 on the way in the not-too-distant future. For those of you who’ve been hanging out for a more feature-complete version of the game, that goal is getting ever-closer.
The biggest change: The addition of Redstone, the material which allows for in-game electric currents and enables all sorts of moving machinery. It’s currently pencilled in for the 0.8.0 update, but probably won’t have full functionality until 0.9.0 (or later). Instead, it will simply be another resource for you to mine and collect – but stockpiling something like this isn’t a bad move.
Rails and Minecarts will also be added in 0.8.0 in a limited capacity – you’ll be able to craft and place them, but (obviously!), powering them with Redstone won’t work just yet.
Also on the way in 0.8.0, as spotted by DroidGamers:
- 3D Clouds
- Sideways logs
- Sponges (Creative only for 0.8.0, Survival in future update)
- Birch, Jungle, and Spruce Planks and Stairs
- Pumpkins and Pumpkin Pie
- Carrots and Potatoes
- Iron Bars
- Carpet – Water Flowing Downward on Farmland (Bug fix)
- Fire Doesn’t Ignite TNT (Bug fix)
This list is not necessarily complete – and not necessarily final – but it’s still plenty exciting. We’ll know what’s made the cut soon enough: 0.8.0 is due out for iOS and Android in November, with 0.9.0 following sometime after that.
