JoJo's Bizarre Adventure renames characters

If you were hanging out for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle, you’d better readjust your expectations. The game is still coming to Western consoles, thanks to Namco Bandai, but some of the characters will have all-new names for the adventure.

The reason is super-simple. The original manga, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, is heavily inspired by music, leading to characters with creative names like Vanilla Ice and Devo. This is mostly okay in its Japanese home territory, but potentially steps on a few toes when it comes to Western audiences. So instead, you’ll be keeping an eye out for characters like Iced and D’bo.

Characters will use the same names as they do in the upcoming US and European versions of the recent anime, with Namco Bandai working closely with JoJo publisher Shueisha to maintain Hirohiko Araki’s vision.

That said: Siliconera reports that the game won’t be entirely in English – the Japanese text that appears in fight scenes will remain, alongside the Japanese voice acting and Japanese sound effects.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle is due out for Western release on PS3 some time in 2014 – it is already available in Japan as a platform exclusive.
