If it feels like everybody is playing either Pokémon X or Y, there’s a good reason for that. Nintendo has just confirmed that – combined – the two games have sold more than four million copies in their first two days of release.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata comments:
The early response to Pokémon X and Pokémon Y not only reaffirms the ongoing passion of Pokémon fans, but also indicates that an entirely new generation of gamers is eager to experience the franchise for itself.
The numbers mean the pair are the fastest-selling games ever on 3DS, and the publisher says it expects “more milestones” for the pair. X&Y are already tracking well ahead of previous title – Black 2 & White 2 – by more than 70%.
However, it’s impossible to directly compare the new games to any earlier editions – X&Y enjoyed the first global launch in franchise history, hitting North America, Japan, Australia and many parts of Europe over the weekend.
The best-selling Pokémon titles to date are Diamond & Pearl, for the original DS. More than 17.63 million units of those two have been sold – a record it looks like X&Y is on track to smash.
