Vanished: Audio-only horror delights

Games these days are all about the graphics, right? Wrong. Rather than worrying about making the graphics look beautiful, developer Pixel Heart did away with them completely, creating Vanished: A new horror experience for iOS that is audio only.

Vanished.

Vanished.

We think that imagination is the most powerful hardware a game needs, so we tried to develop something that is build totally around it. The game itself is only part of the experience. It’s your imagination that creates the world in witch you play. No graphic. No images. No walls.

Created out of an iPhone hardware experiment, Vanished is very different to earlier release Pixel Rush. The new game uses the hardware’s built in compass and accelerometer to “recreate the movements of a person in the real world”. Simply face the direction you want to go, touch the screen to walk, and shake the device to attack with your weapon. Listen closely and you can hear the world of Vanished rotate around you – use audio cues to figure out where that monster is coming from, and run away (or stand and fight!).

You are in a world without light – and without any idea of how you got there, or how to get out. And if this sounds like something you want to do, hop onto iTunes and snag Vanished for free, as part of a launch sale – the usual price after October 1 will be $0.99.
