Grab the popcorn, folks: It’s time for another instalment of “Anything you can do, I can do better” – and this time, it’s the Xbox One that seems to come out on top. The question on the table today: How many controllers can connect to your console at one time?
Microsoft updated the Xbox One Wireless Controller website with the information that you will be able to “Connect up to 8 Wireless Controllers at once to your console” – and that each controller will be usable from up to 30 feet away.
This is twice as many as could be connected to an Xbox 360 – and one more than could connect to a PlayStation 3.
Sony has not made any official announcements on the topic, but Shuhei Yoshida, president of the company’s Worldwide studios has commented via his Twitter that the PlayStation 4 will only allow four simultaneous controller connections.
It’s not necessarily such a clear-cut issue as this, however. It’s still up to individual developers and publishers to determine how many people will be able to play at the same time – very few actually took advantage of 7-person local multiplayer on the PS3. Chances are that, regardless of console capabilities, most games will stick to the traditional 4-player option.
