XCOM: Enemy Within "too big" for console DLC

XCOM: Enemy Within is an expansion pack – that is, DLC – for XCOM: Enemy Unknown on PC and Mac. However, if you want it on console, you’ll have to pick up a whole new game – the Commander’s Edition – because there’s simply too much content for the platform to handle.

The Commander’s Edition will net you a copy of Enemy Unknown, Enemy Within, and the Slingshot and Elite Soldier add-ons. It’s a nifty little pack, but perhaps not the ideal solution for fans who already own the earlier game.

Garth DeAngelis, senior producer at developer Firaxis, tells Joystiq that it was the only way:

For the expansion on the PC, it was fairly straightforward. But when it came to the consoles, it was too big. If we wanted to deliver the same content to the console players, we had to do it this way as a standalone expansion on a disc. We couldn’t simply just patch it in.

This illustrates just how many changes Enemy Within brings to the Enemy Unknown experience. There are new upgrades, unit types, experiences and changes to major skills. Firaxis didn’t want console gamers to miss out on this shiny new “ultimate edition” of the game, so it decided to re-release the whole thing.

Regardless of how you choose to enjoy it, you won’t be waiting long for XCOM: Enemy Within – the strategy title hits PC, Mac, Xbox 360 and PS3 on November 12.
