With just over a week to go before the worldwide Dota 2 championship tournament The International, it’s been announced that contestants will be playing for a prize pool of more than US$2.6 million, as fans around the world show their support.
This is not a crowd-sourced project by any means. The prize pool was originally US$1.6 million, but Valve then designed The International Compendium, a “virtual book” that keeps fans up to date on tournament events, while letting them vote in polls, predict winners and win items themselves. Recent updates to the Compendium have seen player cards and fantasy teams added to the project.
As fans bought the Compendium, their contributions were added to a tally that periodically unlocked new achievements. Early goals included limited battle boosts, skills and items – the $2.6 million tier sees a new Immortal item added to all Compendium owners. There are seven goals in total – and after achieving the $2.6 million mark, there’s just one left.
