League of Legends has been recognised as a “sport” by the United States Government. According to Riot caster Leigh “Deman” Smith, the government sees League of Legends Championship Series as officially on-par with leagues like the NHL, NBA or NFL.
Deman first spotted the news tucked away in a Gamespot video.
The recognition means that pro gamers who are competing in the League of Legends Championship Series are eligible for U.S. visas – just like more traditional athletes.
…and just in case you still thought gaming wasn’t a big deal, Riot has confirmed that later this year, the League of Legends World Championship will be held in the Los Angeles Staples Centre – in front of an audience of more than 10,000 live fans.
