Report: Hayter will still be in Metal Gear Solid 5

It’s official: David Hayter will still feature in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, even though the lead role of Punished Snake has been handed to Kiefer Sutherland.

The news comes via the game’s IMDB page, which lists Sutherland as Punished Snake, The Last of Us actor Troy Baker as Ocelot and Cam Clarke as Eli.

It’s the first time Baker has taken on a named role in the franchise (he appeared in Peace Walker as “soldiers”. However, Clarke has previously appeared in the MGS series as Liquid Snake, sparking even more rumours.

When 24 actor Sutherland was revealed as the voice talent behind the upcoming game, Hayter posted a cryptic Tweet:

Can’t fault @RealKiefer. Great actor, good man. The game will probably still be excellent. Like New Coke!

New Coke was, of course, a significant marketing failure for the brand, considered by many to be a ploy to promote the original Coca Cola product. Could the same sleight-of-hand be at play here?

As for Hayter’s involvement in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain: The veteran voice actor will reportedly be playing a role known simply as “David”. In the original Metal Gear, Solid Snake tells Otacon that his real name is David…
