When we were first treated to an early glimpse of The Last of Us, many fans commented on how great it was that Naughty Dog had secured Juno actress Ellen Page to play lead character Ellie. But, as we learned later, the studio had done nothing of the sort – and today, the actress has spoken up, explaining the whole affair was “not appreciated”.
Page’s response was short and to the point:
I guess I should be flattered that they ripped off my likeness, but I am actually acting in a video game called Beyond Two Souls, so it was not appreciated.
Naughty Dog had actually signed Ashley Johnson to play the 14-year old Ellie.
The initial reveal of The Last of Us at the Spike Video Game Awards in 2011 showed a character who indeed looked remarkably similar to Page, but by the game’s second showing at E3 2012, the art team at Naughty Dog had heavily modified the character to more closely resemble Johnson, who was used for Ellie’s motion capture as well as voice.
If she looks familiar, Johnson is known for her role as Mel Gibson’s daughter in the 2000 comedy What Women Want.
