You might have missed it in all the E3 drama last week, but Phil Fish and the team at Polytron have confirmed they are working on a sequel to indie darling Fez. Nobody’s really seen much from the unsurprisingly-titled Fez 2, but the outspoken developer has announced it will not appear on either Xbox console.
The news does not come as a shock – Fish has been hurt by Microsoft in the past.
Famously, the initial release of Fez was plagued by a corrupt patch, which added a game-breaking bug. Rather than simply fixing the broken code, Microsoft just removed the patch. Making any changes would require re-certification, which would have cost the developer “tens of thousands of dollars“.
Fish has explained in the past that had the game launched on PC instead of XBL Arcade, the issues would have been fixed within two weeks, at no cost.
Now, the wound still stings, as Fish explains to Polygon:
With Microsoft they’ve made it painfully clear they don’t want my ilk on their platform. I can’t even self-publish there. Whereas on PS4, I can. It’s that simple. Microsoft won’t let me develop for their console. But Sony will.
While remaining relatively quiet on the game itself, Fish helpfully promises that “FEZ 2 is to FEZ 1 what Zelda 2 was to Zelda 1, but more different.” Just how different remains to be seen – we don’t yet know anything more about Fez 2 beyond the fact “it exists” and, apparently, it won’t be gracing any Microsoft console.
