DICE expands with new Los Angeles studio

Battlefield developer DICE is expanding into new digs, with parent company EA opening a studio in Los Angeles. The announcement comes soon after the revelation that EA – and specifically DICE – would be working on games based in the Star Wars universe, so fans are wildly surmising about what might be in store from the new DICE Los Angeles studio.

The geographic jump makes sense. While DICE has traditionally been based in Sweden, its competition – Call of Duty makers Treyarch and Infinity Ward – have been in California. Moving closer means being able to access the same “extreme talent pool” that the others can hire from.

It is not yet clear just what the studio will be working on, but Star Wars seems a safe-enough bet. DICE General Manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson explains to the Wall Street Journal:

People stood up and cheered, when I announced that we were working on Star Wars.

DICE Los Angeles is expected to grow to more than 60 staffers by the end of the year – and has already hired personnel from Medal of Honor studio Danger Close.

More is expected to be revealed at E3 next month.
