It’s been a rocky few days for Electronic Arts around the world, with rumours swirling that the EA Partners program has been closed, and other studios “reorganised”. While details are still being kept quiet, jobs have been lost, and analysts surmise studios may have been closed.
The official statement from the publisher is deliberately vague:
In recent weeks, EA has aligned all elements of its organizational structure behind priorities in new technologies and mobile. This has led to some difficult decisions to reduce the workforce in some locations. We are extremely grateful for the contributions made by each of our employees – those that are leaving EA will be missed by their colleagues and friends.
These are hard but essential changes as we focus on delivering great games and showing players around the world why to spend their time with us.
The changes follow on quickly from major social gaming cuts (job losses reported there too), with closures reportedly hitting PopCap Vancouver and Need for Speed: World developer Quicklime Games the hardest.
EA Partners was created in 2009 as an opportunity for studios to get EA‘s backing when bringing a game to market. The program brought us titles such as Brutal Legend, Syndicate, Bulletstorm, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and the entire Crysis trilogy. In the near future, the label is behind Respawn Entertainment‘s first game, and the upcoming release of Fuse from Insomniac.
All details on the layoffs and job cuts should be brought to light on May 7th, when the company is releasing its fiscal year results.
