Finally, we are seeing progress on the long-overdue Warcraft movie. Nick Carpenter, Blizzard‘s Vice President of Art & Cinematic Development, posts that he’s started meeting with the Visual Effects Director of the film, Bill Westenhofer from Rhythm and Hues Studios.
Westenhofer has won both a BAFTA and an Academy Award for his work on The Life of Pi and The Golden Compass, and was famously interrupted during his Oscars award speech when he brought up his studio’s financial issues. (No wonder Carpenter posted to Twitter that the film is “in good hands”.)
His CV also includes lighting and effects animation work on Batman Forever, CG supervisor on Spawn and Waterworld and a supervisor role on The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
The latest update we’d heard from the project was back in January, when Duncan Jones was attached to direct, following on from his successes with Moon and Source Code. The big-budget, live-action Warcraft film adaptation is anticipated to start filming later this year, with a release some time in 2015.
